Peter’s journey shows what’s possible when hard work meets opportunity. Starting out in our yard operations team, he quickly became known for his reliability, calm under pressure and willingness to muck in wherever needed. With the support of company funded training, he’s now progressed to a Class 2 Driver – a milestone he’s earned through dedication, growth, and a genuine commitment to serving our customers.
To mark the moment, we sat down with him to talk about his journey, what he’s learned along the way, and what he’s looking forward to next.
What first brought you to Beesley and Fildes, and how did you start out in the yard?
Peter: I had previously worked for Beesley and Fildes from 2006-2008, so when I saw they were advertising in 2017 I applied as it was a role that I was familiar with and that I enjoyed doing.
Did you always see the yard role as a stepping stone, or did the opportunity to progress come later?
Peter: I was happy working in the yard until my manager asked me about my goals, and what new skills I wanted to learn. After being back for 8 years, maturing in age and growing with the company, I realised I did want progression, and becoming a driver was a great opportunity.
When did you first start thinking about getting your class 2 licence?
Peter: I first thought about it around three or so years ago, and after speaking to my manager about progression I learned that Beesley and Fildes were happy to support me.
How did Beesley and Fildes support you through the training process?
Peter: They were great, they funded it for me, and both the company and my manager gave me the time and support I needed to complete my training and tests. It helped me build my confidence and ensured I was at my best when it came to passing.
What advice would you give to someone who is nervous about taking on a new qualification?
Peter: Don’t be – talk it through with your managers – with their support and encouragement it won’t seem like such a big step.
What do you enjoy most about being on the road?
Peter: I love being out and about, being the one to deliver what customers need, when they need it.
How has your confidence grown since taking on this new role?
Peter: My confidence has grown a lot, I can see the impact of what I am doing for customers, and that gives me the encouragement to keep developing.
How did your managers and colleagues support you during your progression?
Peter: Everyone was so patient, helpful, and supportive. Other drivers gave me great advice and shared different ways they stay safe and compliant.
Looking back, what are you most proud of in your journey so far?
Peter: I am proud of all the new skills I have learned, and the qualification I have gained. Moments like these really inspire me to keep going and push to develop more.
What would you say to someone starting in the yard today who wants to progress like you have?
Peter: Take your time, gather your knowledge, gain the skills – and if you’re unsure, ask! Have faith in yourself and Beesley and Fildes will support your growth.
What is one moment that made you think “I’m really glad I took this step”?
Peter: Coming to work and getting into the truck every day, and being ready for new deliveries, new faces and new challenges.
